KYE-YAC chose the Eleanor Klugh Jackson House for Crisis Intervention this year as their main Christmas charity. The all youth board raised $10,000 for the charity over the holiday season. The “Jackson House” provides food, clothing, and shelter to those in need. The grant from KYE-YAC ensured that countless families had plenty of food, clothing and presents for their children. Kye Masino, founder and president of KYE-YAC says, “We wanted to create an opportunity for as many people as possible to enjoy the holidays without being hungry. We could think of no better way to directly benefit children of Garland County than through a donation to the Jackson House. KYE-YAC board members and volunteers will continue to support the Jackson House and volunteer throughout the year.

KYE-YAC International has had a busy year! The all-youth board is addressing many important issues affecting children in our community and beyond. Hunger, homelessness, disaster relief, healthcare, education, music, art and mentoring are among the causes we are working on – and many more. In May, the KYE-YAC board learned that Arkansas has more hungry children than any other state in the country!. Translation: 1 in every 4th child in our state is hungry. We were appalled and it was time to act. Our board started with a site visit to the Arkansas Rice Depot who’s mission is to find sensible solutions to hunger in Arkansas. They distribute over 8 million pounds of food and supplies to those in need each year. Laura Rhea, President and CEO of the AR Rice Depot gave our board a tour and explained their operations. After meeting with Ms. Rhea, the KYEYAC kids knew childhood hunger was an issue they were ready to aggressively address.

Kye recently spoke to nearly 2,000 teachers at the 2011 Arkansas Reading Association Conference. It was a unique opportunity to talk with the people who are on the front lines with our kids each day at school. Typically, teachers spend more time every day with our children than parents do, and they are often the first to recognize physical, educational, or emotional problems due to hunger. Kye talked to the teachers about how Arkansas now ranks #1 in the nation in childhood hunger.

Kye Masino’s passion for helping others first showed itself when he was only 6 years old, asking his mother if he could read stories to children at Catherine’s House, a shelter for women and children. At 7, he became a Big Brother. By 10, he had established his own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, KYE-YAC International, a fundraising organization run by kids for kids, encouraging others to give their piggybank money to those in need. With its first annual goal to raise $10,000 for Arkansas Children’s Hospital achieved, to say that Kye is driven seems a bit of an understatment. Now 12 years old, Kye is an old pro at fundraising, and yet, his story is just beginning.
